Overview
MRI delivered a large-scale, multi-phase lifting, transport, storage, and installation project within a live, high-security data centre environment.

The project involved the handling and installation of critical infrastructure, including large-scale chillers, high-capacity transformers (TX units), and multiple modular power units (E-Pods), some weighing in excess of 60 tonnes.

Operating across several phases and tight delivery schedules, MRI provided a fully integrated solution — managing every stage from initial delivery and secure storage through to final lifting, positioning, and installation within the building.

Scope of Works
MRI delivered a complete end-to-end solution, including:

• Receipt, unloading, and storage of 16 large chillers

• Phased logistics planning and delivery coordination

• Transport and management of multiple loaded trailers

• Heavy crane lifting operations across multiple stages

• Installation of LV & UPS E-Pods (≈60 tonnes per unit)

• Specialist lifting and positioning of TX units

• Internal movement using gantries, skates, and hydraulic jacking systems

• Custom-engineered lifting solutions

• Full lift planning, RAMS, and CAD support

• Dedicated lifting teams including Appointed Persons, supervisors, and operatives

The Challenge
This project required the coordination of multiple complex lifting and logistics operations within a live and highly controlled environment.

Key challenges included:

• Handling and storing 16 chillers, each weighing approximately 9.5 tonnes

• Lifting and installing multiple E-Pods weighing up to 60 tonnes each

• Managing crane operations over extended periods, with cranes remaining on site for multiple consecutive days and phases

• Operating within restricted access areas and live working conditions

• Installing large TX units within the building where conventional lifting methods were not viable

• Maintaining strict sequencing to align with ongoing construction and delivery schedules

The Solution
MRI developed and delivered a fully engineered, phased solution designed specifically for the complexity of the project.

A key innovation was the deployment of MRI’s custom-built lifting platform — a unique, in-house engineered system used to safely lift and transfer heavy equipment directly into the building.

This one-of-a-kind platform enabled:

• Safe lifting of heavy TX units and infrastructure at height

• Controlled transfer into restricted internal areas

• Increased safety for operatives working within confined environments

• Lifting operations that would not have been possible using standard methods

In addition, MRI utilised:

• High-capacity mobile cranes (up to 750 tonnes)

• Specialist rigging systems and spreader beams

• Aluminium gantries, hydraulic jacks, and machine skates for internal positioning

• Carefully sequenced delivery and lifting programmes

The project was delivered in structured phases, including:

• Secure off-site storage and staged release of equipment

• Coordinated transport and timed deliveries

• Continuous crane operations across multiple weeks

• Precision internal movement and final positioning
